Is 'ladies first' a polite idea, or is it sexist?

Should men do things for women like pull out their chairs at a dinner table or wait for them to go through a door first?

Its' polite and respectful.
Before we get to the ins and outs of door opening, let us take a moment to discuss its place in modern society, because not everyone feels its a tradition worth preserving. There are some women who are offended by it because they think it implies the inferior status of women–that women are too weak to open doors for themselves. Kate thinks that if you’re dating a woman who takes umbrage at having the door opened for her, that’s a red flag, because it signals that she does not understand that a woman can be smart and independent while still being playful about gender roles. I can’t really speak to that, so I’ll let the ladies duke it out. Then there are men who think you shouldn’t do things like open doors for women because if women want to be fully independent and equal these days, then they need to give up being treated with any special consideration. To me this is an entirely wrong-headed approach to relationships, because it’s premised on the idea that everything must be tit for tat. Yes, you open doors for a woman, but your woman probably does special things for you. If she doesn’t, then that’s the problem, not chivalry itself. It’s madness to think that equality must mean doing the exact same things for each other and constantly keeping score.

I don't see it as sexist, I view it more as just courteous. I open doors for anyone if they're close to me, it's just a courteous thing to do.

Humans should stop expecting other humans to do anything for them and do everything by themselves for themselves, within their means and abilities, of course. Opening the door / holding the door open for another human being is really just a courtesy, a polite thing to do, especially if the person has their hands full and can't open the door on their own, but other than that, such treatment shouldn't be expected by default. Do it yourself.

to be honest, I never understood the whole ladies first thing.

why.

does it honestly matter who goes first.

when people say to me oh, ladies first, I always think okay, well, I'm not that impatient... I can wait, you know.

It depends on who has to go Number One and who has to go Number Two. Number One technically outranks Number Two, but Number Two makes a bigger mess. ;) :p

Heaven forbid men see women as something very special and should be treated that way.

For women I hold the door for them to go in first and always will. For everyone else I hold the door open so they can go in behind me.

Lunatic feminists hate it until……. Then feminism is thrown out the door.

Most women see it as polite and if ever on a date, it will score you kudos. It is viewed as being courteous and respectable.

A lady would accept such a courtesy graciously.

Those females that would object to such a gesture aren't "ladies".

Funny you mention that, I have seen women be offended when a man holds a door open for them or pulls out a chair.

My husband still does that stuff; and I LIKE it! :)

Do you do it for him sometimes too? :p
As a matter of fact.......
We recently had a 'discussion' about that.
If he has his hands full with heavy crap & I just have a little light stuff he goes ahead of me so he can open a door. I told him that I don't care what your father taught you, this is ridiculous!
So, yes, I won! :happy2:

Sounds like he is an old school gentleman. :)

I mean, idk. I never would do that - Not because I have a problem with girls, I'm just too selfish to let anyone go first lmao.

At least you're honest :p
