I have a cat and I have been thinking of how I can be able to adopt another cat as this one is always a bit lonely when I am not around. Do you own more than one? How many do you think is enough?

We have one cat in our downstairs garage that we rarely use. I've gained an allergy over the years so that's where we keep him.

I feel like one cat is enough. I feel like having more than one is really messy. That's double the litter box cleaning, more food, and double the vet bill.

I have two cats; in the past have had five cats. For me two cats is nice IF they get along with each other & that's really impossible to determine until the two are together.
If they can't stand each other, sometimes one or both will "act out" & that can be ugly. I don't know what to tell you about HOW to tell beforehand if they're going to get along or not; except that two kittens from the same litter USUALLY get along with each other.
Fortunately for me, the two here accidentally get along just fine; they're both female. I do know that two male cats in the same space, even neutered, will have "turf wars"........sometimes?

Depends on your circumstances. If you're home all the time (retired, unemployed, disabled, has a spouse that works, if you only work part time, etc) then as many as you can handle.

Except when you get to the point of being known as "The Crazy Cat Lady".

Most people that hoard cats sometimes reek of cat piss. 😕

Ummmmmmm...well, the last part is difficult to answer. If you had a rather large plot of land and some extra hands on board, there isn't ever "enough", lol.

But yeah, I've had 3-4 at a time and it's tough, especially when you're the main person who cares for them. If you have friends and family willing to pitch in and the kitties get along, I'd say a reasonable amount is 3-5.

How does one fix this problem?
Oh, I can't give much advice about it :(
I live in a remote place in a forest. Cats can go out whenever they want, so they generally rarely pee inside (except the oldest one). When it's warm, they're out most of the time I often don't see them for a whole day or even longer. It's a bit worse in the winter... If they happen to pee somewhere inside I just use special odor neutralizator.
For what I know for indoor cats it's best to have as many litter boxes as cats +1, and of course cats have to be neutered.
