I stopped for a long time, and then got into Spotify, etc. Recently though, I got back into it. I now have 14,000+ np3s. LOL

Does anyone else download music?

Not anymore but I do have a couple thousand downloaded and saved on my computer and loaded onto my phone. Leftover from when downloading mp3s was the norm. I keep them on my devices because if I am ever without internet or a cell phone signal I have those as a backup / offline listening. Otherwise I am always on Spotify.

I do have nostalgia for the Limewire days ("I did not have sexual relations", anybody?) but nowadays the only stuff I download is to add to my Spotify Local Files for stuff that isn't available there. And even then it's a hassle and I usually just do a bunch at one time and then wait a few months. I don't miss those days of mp3's too much.

I do stil use an mp3 player at work because I don't want to drain my phone battery for when I need to use it for work.

That being said, I have been looking at the modded IPod Classics and really really want one, for nostalgia and the fact they are cool...

So yes I do still download mp3's

Yeah I miss Limewire, though I'm pretty sure I used Frostwire more xD

I always forget about Frostwire, it always felt like the safer, less-insane Limewire.

Surprisingly I think I downloaded more music from Myspace than anywhere else.

I use Amazon Music "Unlimited" now that I got a new PC. So I have an SSD put up with 20k mp3s on it. lol

How retro! Thats cool though.

What made you choose amazon music over spotify or pandora?

Not anymore, since practically everything I want to listen to is on Spotify. Before music streaming services were a thing though, then I would download music pretty often, usually if it was just a single track I wanted. If there was a whole album I liked then I'd just buy it.

Mostly torrents.. but back in the day I used WinMX religiously..

I could never get Limewire to work.. no matter what I tried or did, it never worked..

And I stayed away from Kazaa because I knew other people who used it and their pcs were always full of spam and those stupid tool bars..

I have thousands of Mp3s spanning all the genres that I listen too, but I am not gonna lie, I am afraid to divulge my sources as to where I go for downloads, simply because one of the sites I used to go to, is ALWAYS changing its domains, so I am sure that they get a lot of heat.. or they just might be a honeypot put up by the feds, and they are trying to look legit.. either way, I don't go to that site anymore..

That said though, back in the day, I used to rip the SHOUTCAST streams off of WInamp, of the stations I listened too..

Which is a good way to get Mp3s.. but not a great way, because although you do get the song, you also get the DJ announcements and also, the songs ripped from the stream will have the fade in/out of another song, in it and so, unless you have the songs in the exact order of the playlist, you ripped, it will get annoying very quickly..

For example.. imagine that you are listening your Rock playlist that you ripped off of SHOUTCAST..

Fade Out: Linkin Park - Numb (Fade In: Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up)

Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up (whole song w/ fade out) (Fade In: POD - Youth of the Nation)

Fade Out: POD - Youth of the Nation (whole song w/ fade out)

But your playlist is on shuffle so you get..

Fade Out: Linkin Park - Numb (Fade In: Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up)

Next song: (starts abruptly because the fade in is at the end of a different song) Metallica - The Unforgiven II (whole song w/ fade out) (Fade In: Jem - 24)

Next song: (starts abruptly because the fade in is at the end of a different song) Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train (whole song w/ fade out) (Fade In: Sniff 'n' the Tears - Driver's Seat)

Do you see how annoying that can be? lol

Anyway this post has reminded me that I needed to redownload a lot of songs I acquired this way.. lol

Yes.

hahaha I remember that shit. I used "Kazaa Lite", which was not supposed to have spy and malware. Limewire was cool too. But I mainly used Napster. :)

Omg another WinMX vet? Awesome!

Did you know that the developer behind WinMX has a torrent client named Tixati?

And it is awesome.. I hope they release one for Android..

But yeah when I first downloaded it, I was like hmm.. this is familiar.. it reminds me of WinMX and when I checked the forums, I got my confirmation.. lol

Ironically enough it was the reason I started my forum.. I got tired of dealing with assholes and perverts in my WinMX chat room.. so I started a forum of my own..

And Kazaa Lite was much better than Kazaa but there were still a lot of fake files on there and it was risky to use..

I've used Spotify. It's pretty cool. But I've now gotten addicted to downloading music. I even have a 500GB SSD just for mp3. lol

What bitrate are your mp3s?

I am trying to figure out what bitrate I should use for music and nature sounds.

I usually download 320 kbps, but those result in HUGE files. Which is a problem when I put them on my Zen players, because I won't be able to fit as much on them..

I would like to re-encode them at a smaller bitrate, where I don't lose sound quality, while still having a smaller file size.

WinMX sounds familiar. Was it a p2p system?

My mp3 bitrates vary a lot. I also have a bunch of "FLAC" songs, which are apparently lossless, but huge file size. I have a 500GB SSD dedicated to just mp3s. With 24,000+ songs, I still have over 150GB free space and they load instantly.

I haven't listened to those. Sounds like classic rock. hehe

They're labeled as alternative metal. I became an avid Deftones fan when in the 8th grade. I still love their music.

Yep. And as slow as it was on my Shorty dial up connection back in 2002 it was reliable.

On Sundays something magical would happen and my downloads would actually finish..

It was like my downloads folder was blessed by the WinMX gods themselves.. lol

I'm super old fashioned. Any music I like, I will buy the album on CD. If I like a song but don't want to buy the album, then I will download it from iTunes. I don't stream music.

nope I just stream stuff currently! but I am thinking about getting myself an mp3 player. like an archaic ipod shuffle or something. :D having to stream music and use my bluetooth earbuds or connect to my car's bluetooth just drains my phone battery a lot when i'm out and about and i'm kinda over it. with youtube premium I have songs downloaded for offline listening but that feature has been very buggy for me.
