Dumb. With my luck I would either break a tooth or swallow it

Don't the tend to swallow them in movies? Or leave the last piece of cake uneaten, or throw away the last glass containing the ring?

It seems like one of those 'it was a good idea at the time' things.
 
Dumb especially if the person could be eating whatever the ring is in.
